Brand strategy or brand rules?
Strategy says who you are. Rules say what is not allowed. Work needs both, and Marque holds both.
Side by side
| Topic | Brand rules alone | Strategy and rules together |
|---|---|---|
| What they answer | Can we say this? Can we use that? | Is this us? Then, is it allowed? |
| A draft that breaks nothing | Passes, even when it sounds like anyone. | Read against your positioning, so a flat draft is flagged. |
| A grey area | A rule cannot say. | Your Messaging Hierarchy and Audience Matrix give the reader something to judge by. |
| Where they live | A list of dos and don’ts. | Your Red Lines sit beside the rest of your Intelligence Architecture. |
| Over time | The list grows and nobody reads it. | The strategy stays short, and the rules follow from it. |
Where rules are enough
- A regulator sets the wording and there is no room to choose.
- The brand is young and the strategy is not yet settled.
- The job is to stop a known mistake, not to shape a voice.
Where strategy comes first
- Work is correct but sounds like everyone else.
- Teams ask the same question again and again.
- You want new work to move the brand on, not only keep it safe.
See it on your own work.
